In Japan families & friends gather to honor girls by displaying dolls & eating special cherry blossom mochi. After many years I decided to put up the Japanese dolls that my grandmother gave me as a child. I created a new annual Girls’ Day tradition by blending Japanese & American traditions. I gathered an intergenerational diverse community of friends to celebrate girls. They brought their dolls and favorite foods to share. We spend the afternoon reminiscing about our childhoods and making dolls

Educators were invited to illuminate their offering to education innovation for a small planet by creating luminaries. Luminaries are used all over the world to shine light on intentions, offerings, and wishes. Participants were invited to use the materials provided to represent their individual offering for education for a small planet, based off of the work they do. They were hung as part of a collaborative art installation, displayed throughout the Big Ideas Fest at the Ritz, Half Moon Bay

What is a wish but an expression of the heart. We grew up with “wishing upon a star”. The Japanese Star Festival celebrates star-crossed lovers tie their wishes on bamboo branches once a year. Expressing a wish is powerful & healthy for our emotional, mental & physical body. Wishes allow us to see, here, & discuss our thoughts. The 1st 100 wishes were from Coastside kids, elders, men, women, those under-privileged, & people of different ethnicities.

Santa Fe Internment Camp Santa Fe Art Institute Residency. How could art bring understanding and connection to the communities in Santa Fe? I wanted to inform the public about this history that has touched my own Japanese American family and invite people of other cultures to express their stories of displacement, unjust incarceration, and immigration journeys. I decided to create an experiential space incorporating modalities drawing, movement, speaking, listening, and re-enactment.

These brave women chose to reveal their own abortion experience or those of their loved ones. They submitted letters to a call by NCWCA (Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art and they were displayed at the 4Choice 2013 Exhibition in San Francisco. We appreciated the heartfelt and honest letters we received. We can only guess how difficult it may have been for the women who chose to write to do so, and we acknowledge the voice they offer for those who were not able to share their stories.
